Our Work

Do Window Guards Work?

Yes, but only if they are properly engineered. A lot of store-bought “safety bars” that are sold online are screwed into drywall or flimsy trim and can come loose with as little as 50 pounds of force. Our custom made iron window guards are much more durable and are better bolted down, so they can withstand more pressure.

In addition to preventing falls, it’s an obvious sign to intruders that breaking in is going to need a lot of work. Additionally, unlike less expensive alternatives that bend with a crowbar, ours are made of solid wrought iron rather than hollow tubing, which makes them resistant to prying, cutting, and bending.

Benefits of our custom window guards:

  • Stop falls before they happen, engineered to hold weight
  • Deter intruders looking for easy access
  • Custom-fit to your window so it won’t interfere with opening
  • Virtually maintenance-free, no rust, warping, or loosening

    Commonly Asked Questions

Decorative guards are usually made from thin, hollow tubing and mounted with light-duty screws, fine for looks, but they’ll bend or pull out under pressure. True security window guards use solid or thick-walled steel, are through-bolted into structural framing, and are spaced and tested to meet safety load requirements.

They work beautifully on modern homes, often better. Clean lines, slim profiles, and matte black or charcoal finishes complement contemporary architecture. We’ve installed minimalist horizontal-bar guards on glass-walled lofts in Liberty Village and ultra-sleek vertical designs in West Queen West townhomes.

For real safety, bars should be at least 1/2 inch (12 mm) in diameter if solid, or 14-gauge (about 1.8 mm thick) if hollow steel. Anything thinner might look okay but won’t hold under force.

If they’re properly powder-coated you shouldn’t need to repaint them for 15-20 years, if ever. Unlike painted iron, powder coating won’t chip, peel, or fade from sun or rain. Just rinse them occasionally to remove dust or road grime, no sanding, no touch-ups.

Yes and you should, especially on upper floors. We build guards with quick-release hinges that swing open (secured with a key or child-safe latch) so you can clean windows or exit in an emergency. These designs meet Ontario Fire Code requirements when installed correctly, giving you safety without trapping you inside.
